Biography of George W. Veale

George W. Veale played a pivotal role in Kansas’s history over his sixty-year residence. Born in Indiana in 1833, he became a merchant and the first sheriff of Wyandotte County after moving to Kansas in 1857. Veale raised a company for the Fourth Kansas Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War and later served as colonel. An influential political figure, he held multiple offices, including a member of the first State Legislature and president of the Kansas State Historical Society. Veale’s legacy includes banking and railway contributions. He passed away in 1916.
