HENRY HEPPNER. – This s the gentleman after whom the city, in which he resides, and of which he was one of the first proprietors, and the builder of the first brick building, has been worthily named. He was born in Germany in 1843. He came to New York in 1858 and in 1863 via Cape Horn to San Francisco. His first venture was in Shasta, California, in the mercantile business; but after two years he transferred his business to Corvallis, Oregon. Emery Cecil Cox, 81, who had actively farmed in the Haines area since 1942, died Saturday, October 29, 1988, at his home. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 150 Dewey Avenue. The Rev. Joe Jewett of the First Christian Church will officiate. A concluding service and interment will follow at the Haines Cemetery. Mr. Cox was born October 23, 1907, at Heppner to Isom and Nellie Wiglesworth Cox. He married Ollie Young at Pine City on December 12, 1927. FRANK McFARLAND. – This representative merchant of Eastern Oregon, one of our best and most enterprising men, was born at The Dalles December 17, 1858, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James C. McFarland, who crossed the plains in the year 1852 from Ohio with four-horse teams, and in Oregon have reared a family of four daughters and two sons, all of whom occupy honorable positions in the Northwest. Bean, Harold Cedric – Obituary

Complications following an operation, yesterday caused the death of Dr. Harold C. Bean, 40, president of the State Board of Health and one of the most prominent diagnosticians in Portland. Dr. Bean died shortly before noon at the Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was operated on December 26, two days before his 40th birthday. He had been ill only a week, entering the hospital Christmas Day. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2:30 o’clock at the Finley Chapel. Died of Diphtheria The many young friends in Union, of Eula Herren, a prepossessing child about thirteen years of age, will read with sorrow the announcement of the sudden death, at her home in Morrow county, on the night of August 23d. She had been complaining for several days of a sore throat and on the night of her death was so much worse that her father, who was in Hepper, was sent for, although she not realizing her condition insisted that it was not necessary. Ahlma R. MacDonald, 99, a resident of Tacoma the past 64 years, died Monday [January 7, 1985]. Mrs. MacDonald was born in Heppner, Ore. She was a retired librarian who had worked in Portland and New York City. She was a former member of the Ladies Musical Club, pro America, Tacoma County & Golf Club and Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club.
