Kentucky County VA

Kentucky County VA referred to in the context of Fincastle County, Virginia‘s division, doesn’t exist today as a standalone entity. In the late 18th century, the western parts of Virginia extended into what is now the state of Kentucky. When Fincastle County was dissolved in 1776, its territory was divided to form Montgomery, Washington, and Kentucky Counties. However, Kentucky County itself was relatively short-lived.

Kentucky County, Virginia, was eventually subdivided into three separate counties in 1780: Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln. These counties were part of Virginia until Kentucky became a separate state in 1792. Therefore, when referring to Kentucky County in historical contexts, it’s essentially speaking of a region that would later become part of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
