Jefferson County, Montana 1870-1888

Jefferson County, lying north of Madison, and divided from it by the Jefferson fork of the Missouri, contained 5,000 square miles and 2,500 inhabitants. It was, after mining, chiefly a dairying county, though there several farming settlements sprang up in the valleys of Prickly Pear, Boulder, Crow, Pipestone, and other streams. In 1878, 50,000 lbs of butter and 20,000 lbs of cheese were produced. The farmers raised 50,000 bushels of grain, and there were about 10,000 acres of improved lands. Mrs. Elizabeth Bailey, wife of Geo. A. Bailey, died at her residence in Clancy at six o’clock last Wednesday evening, December 8th [1897]. The funeral services were held at the residence at 10 o’clock Friday morning and the body taken to Jefferson (Jefferson City) for burial, followed by a large concourse of friends. Mrs. Bailey was a native of Pennsylvania and was fifty years of age. When she was only five or six years old her family removed to Nebraska, where she lived for quite a number of years. Longtime Helena resident Minnie E. (Peg) Spalding of 912 Park Lane, died early today [March 30, 1981] at St. Peter’s Community Hospital. She was 74. She came to Helena in 1925. Mrs. Spalding had worked for the Internal Revenue Service and the State Department of Income Tax. She retired in 1962. She was born on December 28, 1906 in Alhambra to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Bonner. She attended schools in Townsend and graduated from high school at Spokane, Wash. She married Charles A. Spalding on July 3, 1926 in Boulder.
