Biographical Sketch of Hon. Joseph H. Smith

Hon. Joseph H. Smith, of the firm of Smith & Clyde, attorneys at law, was born in Beaver County, Pa.; moved to Harrison County, Ia., in 1857, and engaged in the practice of law; formed a partnership with A.W. Clyde in 1879. He enlisted in 1862 in Co. C. 29th Ia. Inft.; was second lieutenant. He was elected a member of the legislature one term. He married Julia A. Warrick, a native of Pa., and has five sons and one daughter.

Biographical Sketch of A. Longman, Jr.

A. Longman, Jr., proprietor of the Logan Flouring Mills, was born in Derby, Eng., in 1848; came to America with his parents in 1851 and located Holt County, Mo.; removed to Harris Grove, Harrison County, Ia., in 1852. The subject of this sketch graduated from Oskaloosa College in 1874. The mill was built in the winter of 1855-6 by Henry Reel, who sold it to Mr. McCoid, of whom Mr. L. purchased in Sept. 1880, and has established and extensive business. He was married in Wis., to Miss. Whitcomb, in 1877, which died leaving one child, a daughter.

On Thursday last, 28 August 1890, Michael Wallace, another of Harrison County’s old settlers passed over the life line to death after a brief illness of about ten hours. He was taken with cholera morbus, subsequently follow, by a congestive chill, from which the grand old hero never recovered. Mondamin Iowa Early Residents

Joseph Krumel native of Bohemia, arrived in Mondamin in 1868. The day after his arrival he went to work cutting logs. Other men were cutting posts and making holes in logs, fastening them together with mulberry limbs. these were made into rafts which were about 25 feet wide and 80 feet long. These were sent to Florence, Nebraska to a sawmill. Mr. Krumel later married Henry McNealey’s widow.
