E. W. Hearing Was Native of County Death Comes to Haines Man Monday Evening E. W. Hearing, a lifelong resident of the Haines section, passed away early Monday morning at a La Grande Hospital following an operation. Mr. Hearing, who had been ill since November, had seemed considerably improved in health the past month and had been going from his home to town and back almost daily. Haines, Baker County, Oregon H. Meredith Spence, 81 passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, after an exhausting illness. He will be greatly missed by his large and loving family and many friends. He was born in Haines, Ore., on Dec. 20, 1924, to Fred and Melvina Spence. He married his high school sweetheart Mary Jane Warner in 1954. Meredith attended Baker, Ore. High School, and served in the US Navy during World War II. Haines, Oregon Mark D. “Monk” Shoemaker, 65, a longtime St. Helens resident, died Dec. 21, 2003, of natural causes. At the family’s request, disposition was by cremation. No service is planned. Mark was born on March 27, 1938, at Toppenish, Wash., to Marcus T. and Lorraine V. Embrey Shoemaker. He attended grade schools at Hermiston, where he lived a large part of his life.
