Baker County Pioneer Called Beyond Thomas Taylor, a resident of the Haines district for the past 45 years, died at his home there at 3 pm today after an extended illness. His condition became worse following a paralytic stroke March 19. Mr. Taylor was born February 3, 1846 in Wayne County, Illinois. He was 80 years old at his death. He came across the plains with his parents in 1852 and settled in the Willamette Valley. Later he came to Umatilla County and then to Haines, where he settled in 1881. Baker City, Baker County, Oregon Early Haines Native Passes At Ripe Age Effie Olive Gardner, 73, died at St. Elizabeth hospital October 15. She was born March 10, 1875 at Haines the daughter of James L. Savage and Melinda Taylor. She was a member of the Methodist church. Haines, Oregon Janis M. Davis Jones, 65, of Haines, died March 24, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Services. At her request there will be no services. Mrs. Jones was born Nov. 1, 1937, at Forks, Wash., to Ed and Doris (Jones) Davis. She received her education in North Powder, and graduated from McLoughlin High School in Milton-Freewater. George Shock, Well Known, Dies Sunday Resident of Halfway and 19 years at Haines “Haines–(Special)–George T. Shock, pioneer resident of Baker County, was born January 19, 1854, at Mexico, MO., and came to the San Luis valley, Colorado, at the age of 20 with his parents, brothers and sisters. The family left Missouri in March 1874, with a party of about 29 other families. They crossed the plains in a caravan of covered wagons driving mostly oxen and bringing their stock and equipment with them.
