James Foster Wells descends from the prominent De Welles family of Lincolnshire, England, established in 794. This lineage produced notable figures, including Thomas Welles, a founding father of Connecticut who championed civil and religious freedoms. Born on August 1, 1864, in Cummington, Massachusetts, James worked various jobs after leaving home before establishing the Central Grocery in 1919.
