Yanktonai Tribe

The Yanktonai Tribe is one of the seven primary divisions of the Dakota, sharing dialects with the Yankton. They historically roamed the headwaters of the Sioux, James, and Red rivers after migrating from Minnesota in the early 18th century. Notably involved in the War of 1812, they later entered treaties with the U.S. to prevent hostilities. Their population estimates varied over the years, with modern groups primarily located on reservations in North Dakota and South Dakota, maintaining traditional customs and social structures.
