Biographical Sketch of Dr. Nyland W. Rice

Dr. Nyland W. Rice, born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1850, was a distinguished physician and the first homoeopathist in San Bernardino. A graduate of Claveric University and Hahnemann Medical College, he excelled academically and practiced in the college hospital before relocating due to health issues. An influential community member, Rice served as Public Administrator and was active in Masonic and Pythian orders, helping to establish the latter in San Bernardino. He passed away on July 23, 1884, leaving a legacy of integrity and friendship.

Biographical Sketch of Albert Johnson Chaffee

Albert Johnson Chaffee, born in Kane County, Illinois, in April 1848, hailed from a farming family that migrated from Vermont. After receiving education at Jennings Seminary, he taught school in Illinois and Iowa before moving to California in 1881. He prospered with valuable land in Garden Grove. Chaffee married Susan E. Ambrose in 1873, and they had four children. A respected community member and active in the Methodist Episcopal Church, he was known for his energetic, enterprising character and strong temperance Republican beliefs.

Biography of D. P. Bullock

D. P. Bullock, born in St. Lawrence County, New York, in 1838, was the son of a War of 1812 veteran. He relocated to Illinois, where he enlisted in the Eighth Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War, participating in many significant battles. After the war, he farmed and worked in railroad shops before settling in Douglas Township, Iowa, in 1880. He married Delia E. Lake and fathered four sons, engaging in local governance and serving as postmaster in Cushing, Iowa.
