Far Indians. A general term used by English writers about the beginning of the 18th century to designate the Indians of any tribe remote from the English settlements of the n. Atlantic coast. It was applied more especially to the tribes of the upper great lakes and to the Shawnee before their removal from the S. The word occurs also as “Farr.” (J. M.)
French Indians. A term used by early English writers to designate the tribes in the French interest, especially the Abnaki and their congeners on the New England frontier.
