Virginia Newspaper Project

This dataset contains 672 newspaper titles that have been digitized and freely placed online for the state of Virginia.

Established in 1993, the Virginia Newspaper Program (VNP) aims to locate, describe, inventory, preserve, and provide public access to newspapers published in the United States. These newspapers are housed not only at the Library of Virginia but also throughout the commonwealth.

Virginia Chronicle is a rich historical archive of Virginia newspapers. It offers free access to fully searchable texts and digitized images of over 4 million newspaper pages.

Beyond the extensive collection at Virginia Chronicle, the Library of Virginia provides numerous resources for newspaper research. Its collection includes more than 3,000 Virginia and West Virginia newspaper imprints, available in both original ink press copies and microfilm. Additionally, a suite of online resources offers gateways to a vast array of historical newspapers.

The United States Newspaper collection provides links to digital newspapers which can be found online from the historical to modern day. While most of these are free to view and download, some may not. In this case we try to provide a $ sign after the link to let you know the newspaper is found on a subscription website. We also feature transcriptions from historical newspapers when available. Also see our United States obituary collections.
