Glen Herbert May, 95, of La Grande, died May 7 at Grande Ronde Hospital after a long illness. At his request, there will be no funeral service. A private memorial service will be held later. Loveland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Glen was born Oct. 24, 1912, to Arther Soles and Ethel Edna Hamlin May in La Grande. Glen’s family were pioneers to the Grande Ronde Valley in 1863, arriving by covered wagon. Glen’s grandfather, David May, owned property in the area known as May Park.
Glen attended La Grande schools and was a lifelong resident of La Grande. Glen married Leta Ellen Halladay in 1933 in Walla Walla. Leta preceded Glen in death in 1988 in La Grande.
Glen worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 40 years, retiring in 1977. He held various jobs at the railroad and was the yardmaster at the time of his retirement.
Glen was an excellent fix-it man and enjoyed working with his herd of cattle. Glen was an avid auction-goer.
Glen is survived by daughters, Jane Cundell and Paulette Williams; stepdaughter, Arlene Palmer Nuesse; sons, John May, Tim May and Mike May; 13 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leta; stepson, Richard Palmer; a grandson; brothers, Richard, Kenneth and Vincent; and sisters, Frances, Jeanne and Blanche.
