William (3). son of Joshua (2) Clayton, was born in Pennsylvania, April 6, 1820. He was educated in the public schools and followed farming for an occupation. He came to New Salem, New York, with his parents when he was eighteen years old. He was a member of the Society of Friends at New Salem, and faithful and consistent to the religion of his ancestors. He married (first) Esther Hoag; (second) Ellen Kitley, of Canada. He died in 1893. Children of first wife: Mary Jane, Ella, Hattie, Susie.
