Robert (Bob) William Metlen died Oct. 31, 2007. Bob was born in Townsend, MT and raised in Pocatello, ID. At 17, he joined the Airforce and was shot down on his 5th mission as a ball turret gunner on a B-17. He walked from Belgium to Gilbralder with the underground and was incarcerated in England until he could be positively identified. Fred Schreek, 88, of Haines, a lifelong Baker County resident, died March 26, 2009. His funeral was Monday. Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army in February of 1941 at the age of 21. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. He proudly served in the 4th Armored Division and received the Bronze Star for meritorious service in action in the 25th Cavalry Reconnaissance.
