La Grande, Union County, Oregon 1918-1998 Sylvester “Sid” Hamblen, 80, died Sunday evening, November 29, at his La Grande home. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Summerville Cemetery, with Pastor Roger Cochran officiating. Payne Family Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hamblen was born January 19, 1918 in Eugene, to Harry and Elma Hamblen. He married Cora Brown in 1942, and they had three children. They divorced after 26 years of marriage, but remained friends. He graduated from Cove High School and helped run the family store. On Dec. 24, 1937, he married Winifred Mae Slauson, and attended Oregon State University and Eastern Oregon Normal School. He studied engineering and put himself through school by working for the Forest Service. He celebrated his 21st birthday while fighting a forest fire. The death of Nimrod Hallgarth, occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. Blanchard, on the Flat, April 16. Deceased was aged 83 years, 5 months and 5 days and was born in Indiana, in which state he resided until last fall, when he came to Oregon to visit his daughter, Mrs. Blanchard. Aged Man Victim La Grande Auto Crash La Grande, Dec. 20. Fielding W. Hail, 68 years of age, was killed early this morning when a car driven by Ray Billups, of Walla Walla, left the road near Island City and overturned. Mr. Hail, who occupied the back seat, was thrown from the car, the crash fracturing his skull and causing internal injuries. He was dead when found about half an hour after the accident.
