Purchase options and add-ons
This handbook presents a step-by-step process for solving genealogical problems, a methodology thirty years in the making. Developed by Anderson and perfected through his work on the Great Migration Study Project, this systematic approach considers each source, each record, and each possible linkage before making a genealogical conclusion. Clearly defined tools, checklists, and logically ordered steps throughout the book help make this method both accessible and effective.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2015This is a very useful book. The emphasis is on U.S. genealogy, of which I do very little. So I was very pleasantly surprised when the author used examples from the U.S. which can be applied to genealogy in any country. It is a very readable book and the examples are illustrated in a rather unique way. The techniques of analysis can be clearly understood by a genealogist at any level.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2016At the most basic level in genealogy, you need to find evidence for each person on your family tree. Then you need to use that evidence to place that person in the correct family. Basically proving identity and kinship.
Once you find documents then you need to analyze all the known information. Do you have the right person, was there more than one person in the area with the name? What proof do you have that this person was born, married or died on this date and place? How can you link this person to the correct spouse(s), parents, siblings and children? What is your hypothesis and how confident are you that it is true?
This is exactly what Robert Charles Anderson did with his Great Migration Research. In this book, "Elements of Genealogical Analysis", he explains his process, gives examples of finding evidence for origin, birth place, parents, military service and and spouse for everyone in the Great Migration. There is excellent instruction on how to evaluate the documents you find and then how use that analysis to link people together (or not).

- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2015Well written.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2018While writing a review of MIlls' "Evidence Explained", I pointed out that "Elements" expanded on her introductory material about the process of genealogical research, so that the format for the many kinds of citations that "Evidence Explained" provides is set in the context of why you're carefully citing your work. I think Anderson's "Elements" is an extremely powerful book that will cause any genealogist to rethink how they tackle research and in fact it may help researchers review previously intractable problems, which may be caused by a faulty process. For example, not extracting all the information in a source can lead to missed opportunities, just as jumping to faulty conclusions does, so thinking about the process a little differently and being more thorough can pay off handsomely.
"Elements" uses actual research examples so it's not just a theoretical treatise; the book shows how to apply the process to your own research. It's relatively short--just a couple hundred pages--but that's the strength. Anderson is focused so you don't have to wade through unnecessary material. I would HIGHLY recommend this for every genealogical researcher, whether a beginner or more experienced. It is considerably more important than, say, a book on the best genealogy Internet sites or how to use a particular genealogical service or software. It is the foundation of your work, and you need to understand the process if you want to do high quality work and enjoy conclusions that are backed up with evidence.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2021Robert Charles Anderson is among the most accomplished genealogist of our time. For some reason, this book didn't receive the careful review evident in his better known publications. Besides silly copy-editing mistakes, style inconsistency, and organizational issues, the explanations could be clarified and the terminology could be refined.
One problem may be that after decades of perfecting his process, it's become automatic, thus difficult to break down for communication, something he alludes to in the book. Another possible problem is the in-house editorial staff was too solicitous or deferential to an organizational VIP.
