The Evolution of Calusa: A Nonagricultural Chiefdom of the Southwest Florida Coast First Edition, First
Purchase options and add-ons
The aims of this study are twofold: compile, for the first time, all the archaeological, environmental, and geological data pertinent to the evolution of the aboriginal inhabitants of southwest Florida; and, using this basis, develop a specific, integrated, and dynamic model of cultural adaptation that will serve as a stimulus for hypotheses that go beyond simple culture-historical concerns for future archaeological research in this region.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2022Format: PaperbackThe Calusa were a chiefdom or a kingdom on the SW coast of Florida. This is the best book on them. The amount of information on the environment and climate is very large, and may cause readers to skip some chapters. However, the analysis of the SW Florida flora and fauna is very good. Recommended for science types who want to know more about this unique region and a society which thrived there.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2018Format: PaperbackI cannot say one good thing about this work. If you are a Marxist and believe that people and culture are determined solely by external forces, then this book is for you. Upon reading, I could think of hundreds of cultures in North America whose history disproves Widmer's theory of Calusa politics. One thing is sure, Widmer slept through all his cultural anthropology courses.
