About Philadelphia, Tombstone Inscriptions from Christ Church

This database contains inscriptions from the tomb and gravestones found in the burial grounds of Christ Church in Philadelphia. The work was published in 1864 and consequently does not contain inscriptions written after October 1863. The earliest date found on a tombstone is said to be 1721.

As this cemetery was the main burial ground for many years during the 18th century, most people with ancestors from Philadelphia will find their family buried there. This cemetery is said to be the resting place of many famous people, including Benjamin Franklin, Peyton Randolph (the first President of Congress), and Francis Hopkinson (a distinguished patriot of the Revolution). Consequently, gravestones do not mark the latter two burials; only a burial record made by the church supports this claim of their being buried there.

All of the inscriptions were copied from the tombstones exactly, so the words found in here are replicas of those you would find in the cemetery.
