About New Jersey, U.S., Compiled Marriage Records, 1684-1886

Bordering New York and Pennsylvania, New Jersey is said to be one of the most densely populated states in the country. This database update adds marriage records for Salem County, in addition to records for Warren County, Atlantic, Bergen, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Sussex, Hunterdon, and Somerset counties. Taken from microfilm copies of original county documents, each record provides spouses' names, marriage date, and county of residence.

Atlantic County:

Atlantic County lies in southeastern New Jersey. It was formed in 1837 from Gloucester County. The records from the county in this database cover the years 1830 through 1850.

Bergen County:

Bergen County records span from 1749 to 1850. Bergen is located in northeastern New Jersey and became a county in 1683; it was taken from East Jersey Province.

Cape May County:

Cape May County was created in 1692 from West Jersey Province. The records from the county in this database span from 1679 to 1850.

Cumberland County:

Cumberland County was formed in 1748 from Salem County. The records from the county in this database span the years 1733 through 1850.

Gloucester County:

Gloucester County records cover 1684 to 1850. The county is located across the Delaware River from Philadelphia and was formed in 1686 from nearby Burlington County.

Hunterdon County:

Hunterdon County records span from 1790 to 1895. Formed in 1714 from Burlington County, Hunterdon County borders Pennsylvania in western New Jersey. Some areas of northern Bucks County, Pennsylvania were part of Hunterdon County prior to 1775.

Salem County was formed in 1694 and organized from West Jersey Province. The records in this database cover the years 1683 through 1850.

From the Ninth Edition of the Handy Book for Genealogists, page 269. According to them, Salem County Clerk even has marriage records from 1675 which is eight years prior to 1683; however, the earliest that I was able to actually find were 1683. The county was set up and even kept records, but did not become an official county until 1694.

Somerset County:

Somerset County was formed in 1688 from Middlesex County. The records from the county in this database cover the years 1778 through 1875.

Sussex County:

Sussex County records span from 1788 to 1850. Sussex is located at the northernmost tip of New Jersey, bordering Orange County, New York. It was formed in 1753 from Morris County.
