About Seventy Quorum Membership, 1835-1846

This database contains details extracted from church records for men who held the priesthood office of seventy in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

What You Can Find in the Records

Seventy is the name of a priesthood office (like deacon or elder) held by some men in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This database contains an index of names and other vital information extracted from church records listing men who held this office in and around Kirtland, Ohio, and Nauvoo, Illinois, in the early nineteenth century. You may find the following details included in this index:

  • name
  • date and place of birth
  • date and place of death
  • father’s name
  • mother’s name
  • wives
  • ordination date

The index may also include other details recorded about these men while they lived in Nauvoo or after they left the city. During some of the years covered by this index, some Latter-day Saint men practiced polygamy, and wives listed may be concurrent rather than second or third spouses following a death or divorce. In some instances the name of the wife may be followed by a number in parentheses. This number denotes the number of children from the union.

Each record should list a source abbreviation. Use the following to determine sources:

  • M: Membership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: 1830–1848 (Susan Easton Black)
  • N: Index to the Nauvoo Land and Record Files
  • Q: Quorum Records from "Selections from General Record of the Seventies, Book B"
  • S: Index, General Record of the Seventies, Book B: 1844–1847
Note: Indexes M, Q, and S are available in all local LDS Family History Center Libraries.
Index N is only available in the Nauvoo Family Land and Records Center, Nauvoo, IL.
