The Southeastern Indians Paperback – October 1, 1976
Purchase options and add-ons
The Indians of the Southeastern United States enjoyed the richest and most advanced level of culture of any native people north of Mexico. Hardly any of their achievements are remembered today, however, and more than any of the aboriginal Americans, the Southeastern Indians have been ignored by both the historian and the general public. The Southeastern Indians brilliantly recaptures the culture, society, prehistory, and history of these native American people. Drawing upon oral traditions, historical documents, and accounts by observers and scholars made over a four-hundred-year period, Charles Hudson boldly and vividly brings to life the world of these Indians by presenting their culture in all its aspects. Here is social and cultural history at its best—a masterful book with unprecedented authenticity and fullness.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2013This is a great read. I read over most of it for my North Carolina Indians class. It covers the Southeastern Indians comprehensively, from the Paleoindian era up until about 1960. If you want to learn about Indians who lived and continue to live in the South, this is the place to go.
Highlights:
The Paleoindian, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississipian eras of Southeastern Indian Civilization.
Exploration of the South by DeSoto through the Roanoke colony
Indians and various wars- in NC the Tuscarora War was especially important while WWII had a gigantic influence on Indians overall
The Green Corn Ceremony (most important religous ceremony)
Deer and slave trades with the French, English, and Americans for guns, kettles and alcohol
Uktenas (Cherokee Snake monster with wings and antlers) and other creatures
Removal of the "Five Civilized Tribes" (Chickasaws, Cherokees, Creeks, Seminoles, and Choctaws)
Indian food and medicine like the Three Sisters (Corn, beans and squash), Black Drink (Indian coffee which is easy to make), and the use of bear oil
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2022I love the book. I ha e recently purchased several books on Native American History. Finding a book dedicated to the Southeastern US is exactly what I have been looking for. The book is in very good condition. I can't think of a better way to expand my library.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2017Definitely the final authority on the Southeastern Native Americans. There will always be questions and no answers but this book covers the vast majority of the cultural lives of the Southeastern Natives.
Thanks for making available.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2013In my research for my current narrative nonfiction work on the 1780 siege of Charles Towne (South Carolina) by the British under Clinton, one of my characters is a young Indian youth. He is befriended by my hero in the swamps of the Low Country. Hudson's book has given me a vivid background for the Indian. I can bring him to my writer's mind and watch as he interacts with the others in my tale.
